Volume 1 of 2.
Victorian gentlewoman, Martha Proby (1783-1864), created this two-volume set of commonplace books based on Sowerby's work. Proby meticulously hand-copied selections and illustrated her books with original watercolor paintings making this set truly one-of-a-kind.
"This 2-vol. set was purchased by me [John Sinkankas] in February, 1973. . . It was bound by me in 1973. Pencilled numbers on some plates indicate correspondences with the volume and plate of the original printed edition [of Sowerby's British Mineralogy in 5 volumes]. The present work is all hand lettered, drawn, and watercolor painted by a certain Martha Proby. John Sinkankas"--typed note in back of volume 1.
Volumes contain only a selection of minerals from Sowerby's original publication.
